Holiday help for families in 2026: the dates that matter, 2 November to 17 December
SNAP, heating help, gifts and health coverage each run on their own clock. Here is the date-ordered list, the arithmetic back from Christmas, and what to do while you wait.
Short answer: The dated holiday deadlines in 2026 fall between 2 November and 17 December, and the one to count back from is Christmas Day, 62 days after 24 October 2026. File SNAP by 24 November (or by 17 December if you qualify for expedited service) so the federal deadline lands on 24 December, apply for HealthCare.gov coverage by 15 December, and mail Operation Santa letters by 5 December. Heating help opens on 2 November in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Holiday assistance deadlines in 2026, in date order
The dated holiday cutoffs in 2026 run from 2 November to 17 December, and most of them depend on where you live. This list holds every date we could read on a program's own site on 24 October 2026; programs without a posted 2026 date are described by their standing rule further down, not guessed.
- Mon 2 Nov
- Pennsylvania LIHEAP season opens (to Friday 23 April 2027). Ohio's Winter Crisis Program opens (to 31 March 2027). USPS registration to adopt Operation Santa letters opens.
- Mon 16 Nov
- USPS Operation Santa letter adoption window opens; registered adopters can take single or family letters.
- Tue 24 Nov
- Last day to file a normal SNAP application so the 30-day deadline is 24 December (7 CFR 273.2(g)(1)).
- Sat 5 Dec
- Letters to Santa must be postmarked by this date to be eligible for adoption (USPS, 14 September 2026).
- Tue 15 Dec
- HealthCare.gov: last day to enroll or change plans for coverage that starts 1 January.
- Thu 17 Dec
- Last day to file an expedited SNAP application so the 7-day deadline is 24 December.
- Fri 25 Dec
- Christmas Day, a federal holiday per the OPM 2026 holiday schedule; so are Wednesday 11 November and Thursday 26 November.
Between 24 October and 24 December 2026 there are 42 weekdays that are not federal holidays (11 and 26 November are the two holidays in that stretch). OPM's list binds federal employees; state and county benefit offices set their own closing days, so check the hours of the office you need before a long weekend.
What to do while you wait for holiday help
Most holiday help is not instant: a normal SNAP application can take 30 calendar days, Ohio's regular HEAP up to twelve weeks, and the nearest heating-help openings (2 November) are 9 days after 24 October 2026. These steps cover the gap, in the order they pay off:
- Call the USDA National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479), Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, to be connected with meal sites and food banks near you.
- Find a food bank first. The Feeding America locator shows the food bank serving your county; you do not need a benefit decision to use one.
- Dial 211 for local emergency funds, utility help and holiday programs run by community groups in your area.
- Ask your local Salvation Army unit about holiday assistance: its holiday-giving page reports 2,562,029 people and families received holiday assistance in 2025, and sends families who need help to their local unit.
- Ask the SNAP office to screen you for expedited service when you apply: if you qualify, benefits are due by day 7, not day 30.
- If you are working, ask whether your employer or an app offers earned wage access: it lets you draw part of the pay you have already earned before payday. It is not a loan; check the fee before you use it.
SNAP before Christmas: the filing cutoffs of 24 November and 17 December
SNAP applications filed by 24 November must be paid by 24 December under the normal clock, and applications from households that qualify for expedited service filed by 17 December must be paid by the same day. The rule is in 7 CFR 273.2(g)(1): the state must give an eligible household an opportunity to participate "no later than 30 calendar days following the date the application was filed." For expedited households, paragraph (i)(3)(i) requires the state to post benefits to the EBT card "not later than the seventh calendar day following the date an application was filed."
The filing date is yours to set, and it can be quick: under paragraph (g) an application is filed "the day the appropriate SNAP office receives an application containing the applicant's name and address, which is signed by" a responsible household member or authorized representative. You do not need every document to start the clock. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November, so an application filed on Tuesday 24 November is the last one whose normal 30-day deadline falls before Christmas Day.
Expedited service is for households with almost no money when they apply. Under paragraph (i)(1), you qualify if monthly gross income is under $150 and liquid resources are $100 or less, or if combined monthly gross income and liquid resources are less than the household's monthly rent or mortgage plus utilities. If the state denies on day 30 and you take the required action within 60 days of the filing date, paragraph (h)(2) says it must reopen the case without a new application. Our guide to how long SNAP approval takes covers the interview and the delay rules.
Heating help this winter: LIHEAP dates in Pennsylvania and Ohio
Heating help in Pennsylvania and Ohio opens on 2 November 2026, and each state sets its own season, income test and application route. LIHEAP is a federal program run through the states: the Administration for Children and Families describes it as helping families with home energy costs, energy crises, weatherization and minor energy-related home repairs. Federal law does not give one national opening date, so this guide states a date only for states whose agency we read.
Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania DHS LIHEAP page says the 2026-27 season is scheduled to open on 2 November 2026. The 2026-27 customer fact sheet says the season opens Monday 2 November 2026 and continues through Friday 23 April 2027, and that customers who did not receive LIHEAP last season can apply on or after 2 November, including online at COMPASS. The same DHS page still shows the closed 2025-26 window (3 December 2025 to 8 May 2026) in its text, so use the 2026-27 fact sheet's dates.
Ohio. The Ohio Consumers' Counsel HEAP sheet says applications for the current winter heating season are accepted from 1 July 2026 until 31 May 2027, and may take up to twelve weeks to process. The Winter Crisis Program sheet says the program runs from 2 November 2026 through 31 March 2027 and can cover electric and natural gas bills, bulk fuel, tank replacement and heating unit repair or replacement. For a household that is already late on a bill, the crisis program is the faster door; our page on how fast LIHEAP crisis help is covers the timing.
Other states: read your state energy office or 211 for its 2026-27 dates before you plan around one. If a utility has told you it will shut off service, utility shut-off protection by state lists the protections that apply.
Gifts and toys: Operation Santa, Angel Tree and Toys for Tots
Three programs put gifts under the tree for families who cannot afford them, and only one of them posts a national 2026 date. The program you can act on, as of 24 October 2026, is USPS Operation Santa: the Postal Service release of 14 September 2026 says it is accepting letters from children and families in the continental U.S., Hawaii and Puerto Rico, that letters must follow program guidelines and be postmarked by 5 December to be eligible, and that there is "no guarantee that letters submitted to the program will be adopted." Letters go to Santa Claus, 123 Elf Rd., North Pole, 88888.
The Salvation Army's Angel Tree is run through local units. Its national holiday-giving page tells families who need help providing presents for their children to reach out to their local Salvation Army, and reports that over a million children received Christmas gifts through Angel Tree in 2025. The national site gives no sign-up date, so ask your unit directly; the Walmart Angel Tree page is for donors, not for families seeking help.
Toys for Tots runs local campaigns. Its national site returned an access error to us on 24 October 2026, so we do not state its request dates or rules here; search for your local campaign and read its own page.
TO SAY TO THE SNAP OFFICE "I am filing a SNAP application today. My name and address are on it and I have signed it. Please screen me for expedited service: my income this month is $____, my cash and bank balance is $____, and my rent and utilities are $____. Please give me my filing date in writing." TO SAY TO A UTILITY OR LOCAL AGENCY "I am behind on my heating bill. Do you have a crisis or winter program open now, and what do you need from me to apply today?" KEEP IN ONE FOLDER - Photo ID, Social Security numbers, proof of address - Last 30 days of pay stubs or benefit letters - Latest heating or electric bill (in an adult's name) - Rent receipt or lease DATES TO WRITE DOWN SNAP filed: ________ Day 7: ________ Day 30: ________ Heating application sent: ________ Decision due: ________ Santa letter postmarked by 5 Dec: ________ HealthCare.gov plan chosen by 15 Dec: ________
Health coverage for 1 January: the HealthCare.gov deadline of 15 December
HealthCare.gov's last day to enroll or change plans for coverage that starts 1 January is 15 December. The Marketplace dates and deadlines page lists 1 November as the day Open Enrollment starts, 15 December as the last day to enroll or change plans for coverage that starts 1 January, and 15 January as the end of Open Enrollment, after which you need a Special Enrollment Period. It says that starting 1 November you can apply for 2027 coverage or update your application. Coverage starts 1 January only if you also pay your first premium.
Holiday food: hotline, food banks and 211
Food help does not wait for a benefit decision, and three free lookups find it the same day. The USDA National Hunger Hotline (1-866-348-6479, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET) connects callers with emergency food providers, government assistance programs and social services; the page is run by Hunger Free America and was last updated 17 September 2025, so confirm hours when you call. The Feeding America locator finds your county's food bank by ZIP code. 211.org lists local pantries, holiday meal programs and emergency funds. Our WIC guide covers food help for pregnant women, infants and young children.
Holiday help by situation: self-employed, already waiting, denied
- If you areSelf-employedGive this month's gross income and your cash on hand for the SNAP expedited screen, because the test in paragraph (i)(1) looks at monthly gross income and liquid resources; bring your last 30 days of deposits.
- If you alreadyFiled SNAPCount from your filing date, and call the office with it if day 30 passes with no decision.
- If you wereDenied on day 30Act within 60 days of filing, because 7 CFR 273.2(h)(2) lets the case reopen without a new application.
- If you areBehind on heatApply on 2 November for Pennsylvania LIHEAP or Ohio's Winter Crisis Program, and ask your utility about protection from shut-off.
- If you needGifts for kidsCall your local Salvation Army unit first and mail a Santa letter by 5 December.
Holiday help scams and cost: what is free and what to ignore
Applying for SNAP, LIHEAP, HealthCare.gov and Operation Santa starts on the agency's own site, and none of the pages linked in this guide asks you to pay to be placed on a list. Treat any text, call or social-media message that offers "holiday grant money" you did not apply for as a scam, do not pay a fee to anyone who says it will speed up an application, and never share your EBT card number or PIN. If you are unsure whether a message is real, close it and go to the program page linked here. This guide could not read the Federal Trade Commission's pages by script on 24 October 2026, so it cites no FTC figures; report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

How we built this page: compiled and verified on first-party sources, read 24 October 2026: 7 CFR 273.2 on the eCFR (up to date as of 16 October 2026), HealthCare.gov, the USPS release of 14 September 2026, the Pennsylvania DHS LIHEAP pages, the Ohio Consumers' Counsel HEAP and Winter Crisis fact sheets, the OPM holiday schedule, and the Salvation Army and USDA pages named above. The day counts are our arithmetic from those dates. We did not apply to any program. Programs whose 2026 dates we could not read are described by their standing rule or flagged.
